Senior Tax Work-Off Program

Fiscal Year 2020 (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020)

Interested residents must re-apply every year.

PROPERTY TAX WORK OFF PROGRAM

The tax work off program is administered by the Council on Aging (COA) and is a win-win for both residents and the community. Last year, participants in this program provided over 2,500 hours of valuable service to Town Departments.

By vote of Spring Town Meeting, they have been funded for forty, 65- hour positions. Applicants will be paid $12 per hour which is the current state minimum wage.  State guidelines dictate that participants must be paid no less than the federal minimum wage and no more than the state minimum wage. After completing the 65 hours, the one-time payment of $780 is processed. This program is intended to provide tax relief to the participants.

Tax work-off applications will be available starting June 3, 2019 at the COA office. Turn applications in to COA on or before Friday June 28 at noon to be entered into the July lottery. Applications received after that date will still be accepted but those names will be placed at the bottom of the list and then processed in order received.

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) considers residents who participate in the Tax Work Off program to be temporary, part time employees of the Town of Wayland.

The application packet for the FY2020 Tax Work Off program will include the following:

  • Cover Letter

  • Program Guidelines

  • Application Form

  • Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) (Mandated by the State)

  • W-4 Withholding Form:  A deduction will be made for Medicare and calculated at 1.45% of your total earnings. A W-2 is issued at year-end to reflect your earnings for the 65 hour position.

  • I-9 Form: Employment Eligibility Verification mandated by the Department of Homeland Security.  This form requires the employee to present a passport or two acceptable forms of identification as listed on the form for compliance verification.

  • Council on Aging Confidentiality Agreement

Residents continue to tell us what a satisfying experience they have. With budgetary restrictions and growing demands, Town Departments are greatly appreciative of the enormous help received from the Senior Tax Work-Off program. If you have questions about the program or are interested in applying, please contact:

Shawna  Levine, Project Coordinator, Wayland Council On Aging (508- 358- 2990) or email slevine@wayland.ma.us

Each year there is increasing diversity in the types of positions available for Tax Work Off participants.  The Town departments identify their specific needs for the fiscal year. The COA then reviews each application to match an applicant’s interest and skill set with a departmental need. Although our success rate is very high, placement in the program cannot be guaranteed.
